Although drums have been around just about as long as humans have existed, it wasn't until 1918 that Ludwig Drum Company introduced a drum set that included a bass drum, a snare, two cymbals, and a woodblock. It was primarily used for creating live sound effects for silent films at the time. In the 1930's the big band era helped popularize the use of the percussion set we know and love today. Beatle-mania in the 1960's and Ringo Starr pushed the background role of the drummer to the front of the stage. More men and women than ever wanted to be a drummer.
This tee pictures a patent by Henry Slingerland from 1937. He invented a new mechanism for a snare drum that allows the snare device to span the entire diameter of the drum. It also allows the tension to be easily adjusted, so the musician could tune exactly how much rattle he or she wanted when the drum was hit. I am sure some of the drumming greats like John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and Neal Peart (Rush) sure do thank you, Mr. Slingerland.
